Are Ragdoll Kittens Good Pets? 11 Reasons Why This Breed Is a Family Favorite

Ragdolls, with their striking blue eyes and famously gentle personality, are currently one of the most popular cat breeds worldwide for good reason. Originating in California in the 1960s, this relatively modern breed has stolen hearts with its affectionate and laid-back nature.

If you are wondering if a Ragdoll kitten is the right pet for your home, consider these reasons why they make such great companions.

1. Ragdolls are stunningly beautiful

Ragdoll kittens grow up to be stunning cats! They are simply gorgeous! Traditional Ragdolls have beautiful bright blue eyes.  Accompanied by little rounded cheeks, the faces of Ragdolls can easily be described as melt you heart adorable.

The coat of a Ragdoll kitten is soft, fluffy and has a pointed coloring. This means that the kittens’s body has a darker color in certain areas such as the face, ears, legs, and tail.

Even so, the appearance of Ragdoll kittens can still vary greatly as they come in various patterns and colors.

The four main patterns for Ragdoll kittens are mitted, colorpoint, bicolor and van, and these patterns can be adorned in colors like blue, mink, chocolate, seal, lilac and red.

2. They offer "puppy-like" affection and loyalty

While most cats value independence, Ragdolls crave human company and are often described as “puppy-like”. This breed is known for its strong loyalty and will often:

  • Follow you from room to room like a shadow.
  • Greet you at the door when you arrive home.
  • Snuggle up on your lap or in bed at every opportunity.

3. They go limp when picked up

He goes limp in the arms of his cat dad! Wiseacres Muffin, a seal bicolor Ragdoll is happily with the Ficut family of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

The breed’s unique name comes from its tendency to go completely limp and relaxed, just like a child’s toy, when picked up. This gentle trait was selectively bred into the cats and makes them perfect for cuddling. They are generally unconcerned by this treatment and genuinely enjoy being carried, making them an ideal family pet.

4. They are exceptionally patient and gentle with children

Robert S. of Springdale, Arkansas writes of his Wiseacres seal bicolor Ragdoll kitten: “Birdie is growing up strong and with lots of personality. Every one of our friends that have come across Birdie have expressed how beautiful she is and ask where we got her. She has been a purfect addition to our family!”
Ragdolls are known for their tolerance and calm demeanor, making them excellent companions for families with children. They are less likely to scratch or bite, are patient with gentle handling, and are a safe, even-tempered playmate.

5. They get along well with other pets

This breed’s easygoing and sociable personality means they readily accept new housemates, whether they are other cats or a dog. They are peaceful and sociable, helping to create a harmonious multi-pet household.

6. They prefer to live indoors

With a trusting and docile nature, Ragdolls are not well-equipped for the dangers of the outdoors and are safest as indoor-only cats. This makes them an ideal choice for urban dwellers or those living in apartments, as they are content to lounge and play inside.

7. They have an easy-to-manage, low-shedding coat

Despite their luxurious, semi-long coat, Ragdolls have a single coat without a dense undercoat, which means they shed less than many other long-haired breeds. Regular brushing once or twice a week is usually enough to prevent matting and keep their fur soft and silky.

8. They are not overly vocal

While individual temperaments vary, Ragdolls are generally quiet cats. They communicate with soft chirps and gentle meows, making them a good fit for people who prefer a quieter home environment.

9. They are intelligent and easy to train

10. They are large, but gentle, giants

Ragdolls are one of the largest domestic cat breeds. Adult males weigh about 15 to 20 pounds (6.8 to 9 kilograms) while adult females weigh around 10 to 15 pounds (4.5 to 6.8 kilograms).

Their substantial size is matched by their calm and gentle temperament, which can be an advantage in a busy household where a smaller cat might be at risk of being stepped on or trapped.

11. They are adaptable
